Airlangga Medical Scientific Week (AMSW) is an annual scientific event held by the Faculty of Medicine Airlangga University. AMSW opens opportunities for medical students in Indonesia and around the world to submit their works in the form of research papers, literature reviews, scientific essays, public posters, education videos, and 3MT Competitions.
Hello, young researchers!
Nephrology and urology are essential components of the excretory system of the human body. Nephrology focuses specifically on the kidneys, which play a crucial role in filtering waste products and excess fluids from the blood to form urine. On the other hand, urology deals with the entire urinary tract, including the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra, along with the male reproductive system. Nephrologists study kidney function, monitor blood pressure, and assess electrolyte imbalances to diagnose and manage kidney-related disorders, including chronic kidney disease, kidney stones, and kidney failure. Meanwhile, urologists diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions, such as urinary tract infections, bladder issues, prostate disorders, and urological cancers. They employ various medical and surgical techniques to maintain and restore the health of these vital systems, ensuring the proper elimination of waste and the overall wellbeing of patients.
The integration of technology in nephrology and urology medical intervention offers numerous advantages, revolutionizing patient care and outcomes. One significant advantage is robotics and minimally invasive surgical technologies have transformed surgical procedures, leading to reduced surgical trauma, faster recovery times, and improved surgical precision. Overall, technology empowers nephrology and urology specialists with valuable tools to deliver more efficient, personalized, and effective medical interventions, ultimately improving patient outcomes and quality of life.
Not only medical intervention, but the integration between medical intervention and lifestyle changes is paramount in managing and treating nephrology and urology system disorders. For conditions affecting the kidneys and urinary tract, a comprehensive approach is essential. Medical interventions, including medications, dialysis, and surgical procedures, are used to address specific issues and alleviate symptoms. However, lifestyle changes play a crucial role in supporting the effectiveness of these treatments and promoting overall health. Adopting a balanced diet with limited sodium and protein, staying adequately hydrated, and maintaining a healthy weight can help reduce the burden on the kidneys. Regular exercise and stress management can further contribute to improved outcomes. Collaborative efforts between healthcare professionals and patients in implementing lifestyle modifications alongside medical therapies can lead to better long-term management and prevention of complications associated with nephrology and urology system disorders.
So, the awareness of the importance of lifestyle changes alongside medical interventions must be instilled in prospective medical personnel, and it represents a big hope in the medical world and society for dealing with various nephrological and urological disorders. Therefore, Airlangga Medical Scientific Week 2023, an annual student Scientific Competition held by the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Airlangga, carries the grand theme, "Holistic Approaches to Kidney and Urinary Tract Wellness: Integrative Medicine and Lifestyle Interventions". We invite all of you, young researchers and innovators from various majors, to share ideas, findings, and new perspectives in this field through international-level and national-level scientific competitions. The international competition consists of 2 branches, namely literature review and research paper, while the national competition comprises 4 branches: public posters, scientific essays, educational videos, and the 3 Minute Thesis Competition.
Lastly, let's have a mutually supportive competition and showcase the best ideas and innovations. Hopefully, through these small steps, we can contribute and provide solutions to health problems in Indonesia and even the world.

Originally, the 3MT Competition was firstly conducted and developed by Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) student in The University of Queensland (UQ). The aim of 3MT is to cultivate student’s academic, presentation, and research communication skills. The competition supports student capacity to effectively explain their research in three minutes, in a language appropriate to a non-specialist/general audience. Based on the 3MT official Handbook 2021 by The University of Queensland (UQ), we adopt the 3MT concept and guidelines with the target participants are undergraduate students and undergraduate graduates from various majors in Indonesia.
